This Grilled Orange Chicken recipe has a delicious orange flavor! It can be served over rice or leave the orange chicken on the skewers to serve as kabobs.
When I was a kid, the only Chinese foods I knew were Chicken Chow Mein, fried rice and fortune cookies. I have countless memories of eating chicken chow mein with my parents and grandparents. They usually picked up from a local Chinese restaurant after church, on the way to one of our houses. The chicken came in a takeout container with cooked celery and sauce. The other containers held white rice, crispy noodles and cashews.
When I was very young, I would only eat rice and crispy noodles with soy sauce on them. Eventually, I came to love the whole combination of chicken chow mein. It wasn’t until I was a teenager that I finally tried some other Asian chicken dishes like lemon chicken, sesame chicken and orange chicken. Last year, I shared a 30 Minute Skillet Recipe for Orange Chicken that my family loves. Now that summer is in full swing and cooking on the grill is where it’s at, I decided to make Grilled Orange Chicken and I am excited to share the recipe with you today.
First cut three boneless, skinless chicken breast into pieces. Make the orange chicken marinade by mixing together orange juice concentrate, soy sauce and olive oil. Add the chicken pieces and marinate for 20 minutes.
Put the pieces of chicken on skewers. Dip a paper towel in olive oil and use tongs to lightly brush the oil over the grill grates. Grill the orange chicken kabobs over medium heat, for 6-8 minutes, turning every couple of minutes, until the chicken is fully cooked.
To make the orange chicken sauce, whisk together orange juice concentrate, barbecue sauce, olive oil and corn starch until smooth. Cook over medium heat for a few minutes, until thickened.
You can brush the orange chicken sauce on the grilled orange chicken skewers and serve them as kabobs, I wanted to have my grilled orange chicken on rice, so I removed all of the chicken from the skewers.
Pour the sauce over the grilled orange chicken pieces and stir to coat. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and sliced green onions.
Serve over rice, noodles, quinoa or even cauliflower rice! This grilled orange chicken has a fantastic orange flavor from the juice concentrate and it is super easy to make for a weeknight dinner.

Once revered by customers, Trader Joe's Mandarin Orange Chicken has fallen out of favor after customers began noticing an alleged decline in meat quality.
To grill: preheat your grill to medium high and lightly oil the grates. Place chicken skin-side down and grill for 5-6 minutes until grill marks appear. Flip your chicken and cook for another 6-8 minutes more until the internal temp reaches 165 degrees F.
The chicken itself is made with dark meat that is lightly battered then fried. Before creating orange chicken as we know it, Panda Express restaurants in Hawaii served a similar dish with bone-in meat.
Using your air fryer to make Trader Joe's Mandarin Orange Chicken is probably the most popular tip—in fact, everyone from the New York Times to TikTokers seem to be in agreement. Heat the air fryer to 400°F and cook the chicken directly in the basket for just 10 minutes and get ultra crispy results.
They have said this was due to the entree being a limited time item, but the popularity should make them change their minds. Now, millions of people will not be able to have a full meal other than sides at Panda Express. The people are outraged as seen in the comments on various social media accounts.
Grilled chicken typically provides a nice char, which gives the poultry more flavor and texture compared to baking or sauteing. It's especially nice during the warmer months because you get some fresh air — and the technique prevents the house from being overwhelmed with cooking odors.
For the best grill marks, don't move the chicken once it has been set down and avoid pressing, prodding, or poking for 3 minutes. Flip the chicken — when ready, the breasts will lift up easily for flipping. Cook the second side until grill marks appear, about 3 minutes more.
The goal is to maintain a low enough grill temp so that the chicken cooks "low and slow." The chicken is done when the internal temperature of the chicken pieces are 160°F for breasts and 170°F for thighs, when tested with a meat thermometer.
The orange sauce is divine! It is a sweet orange sauce made with orange juice, vinegar, garlic, sugar, soy sauce, ginger, red chili flakes, and orange zest. It is both sweet and spicy and full of flavor.
According to NPR, Panda Express is believed to have invented this popular dish in the 1980s when a chef at one of the chain's Hawaii locations experimented with creating a spin on General Tso's chicken. I've eaten this restaurant's orange chicken for as long as I can remember.
Sauce is like gravy in that if it's not thickening as much as you want after you've added the cornstarch, turn the heat up a little and continue to cook. Keep an eye on it though, as it can thicken quickly.
Tangerine chicken tastes fresh and spicy, but orange chicken tastes sweet and sour. Orange chicken is crispy cooked in a sweet and little spicy orange sauce. The sweetness of orange chicken was introduced to cater to American tastes.
Deboning the thigh, it makes for a delicious and easier piece of chicken. Another important key, but it is optional, is using the orange peel to really give the dish an entirely different dimension. The peels add a refreshing citrus flavor to the chicken and they add a sweet richness to the whole meal.
The company may even choose to discontinue an item if manufacturing fees are too high, which keeps prices reasonable at the store. Some discontinued items will make a comeback if Trader Joe's can figure out issues, but only if the solution arrives within a certain time frame.
Panda Express, the largest family-owned and operated Asian dining concept in the U.S., is pleased to announce the return of its breakthrough innovation, Beyond The Original Orange Chicken™.
While the dish is very popular in the United States, it is most often found as a variation of General Tso's chicken in North America rather than the dish found in China. Chef Andy Kao claims to have developed the original Chinese-American orange chicken recipe at a Panda Express in Hawaii in 1987.
Nord means north in German, and süd means South. The two Aldis made their pushes into the American market in the 1970s. The first Aldi from Aldi Süd opened in Iowa in 1976. Aldi Nord purchased Trader Joe's in 1979 from founder Joe Coulombe.
