What Is Bang Bang Shrimp

This is a popular appetizer from the most popular restaurant Bonefish Grill. The world is going crazy over Bonefish Grill restaurant’s Shrimp recipe! Both with crowd who have tasted it and with crowd who just haven’t it, everybody loves it!

This crispy crunchy shrimp is covered with sweet and spicy creamy sauce which is the real star of the dish. Yes the sauce is the star! We are talking about this super addictive sauce that is spoon licking good.

This dish is served great as an appetizer over a bed of iceberg lettuce. You could also serve it as a meal over a bed of steamed rice.

Let’s talk about the star here!

Bang Bang Shrimp Sauce

I’ve got three words to describe the sauce.

Sweet

Spicy

Creamy

Sweet and spicy sauce has mayonnaise as the base. Combine mayonnaise with Thai sweet chili sauce, and Sriracha sauce. You can add in garlic powder too for added flavor. That’s it, it’s that easy to make most addictive sauce.

Bang bang sauce particularly is great with fried shrimp. Or even fried chicken. I’d say anything fried, just smoother it with bang bang sauce! If you are looking for ridiculously easy and tasty appetizer sauce, bang bang sauce is what you need to try. Serve it as dipping sauce with any fried appetizers.

How to Make Bang Bang Shrimp

Pick fresh juicy shrimps. The dish only tastes as good as shrimps, fresh shrimps are always better.

Remove the head and peel the shell. De-vein and clean it thoroughly.

Using kitchen towel, pat dry shrimp completely.

Pro-Tip: Your shrimp wont turn crispy as expected if you do not dry it completely.

I like to season my batter for coating shrimp. If you are not particular about seasoning, skip it. Well seasoned shrimps are so much better than bland ones.

Prepare flour mix but whisking corn flour, salt and pepper to taste.

Prepare buttermilk but whisking in a dash of salt.

Soak cleaned and dry shrimp in buttermilk mix for about a minute. DO NOT marinate shrimp for longer. Shrimp will begin to cook in buttermilk if left longer.

Remove shrimp from buttermilk.

Coat it well in corn flour. Shake off excess flour.

Pro-Tip:use one hand to coat shrimp in liquid marinade and the other hand to coat in dry marinade. No more cakey hands!

Heat canola oil in a pan.

Deep fry shrimps in hot canola oil for about 1 to 2 minutes on each sides or until golden brown.

Pro-Tip: Fry shrimp in batches, do not crowd the pan.

Oil should be hot to get golden brown fried shrimp. Use thermometer in case you want to be safe. Heat up oil to 375 degrees, then start frying shrimps.

Remove fried shrimp from oil and place it on plate lined with kitchen paper to absorb excess oil.

Pour to your hearts content bang bang sauce over the shrimp, toss to coat evenly. You can drizzle the sauce over bang bang shrimp if you prefer it that way.

If you are left with little sauce, use it for dipping.

Sprinkle green onions on top, little sesame seeds.

Serve shrimp immediately over a bed of iceberg lettuce leaf.

Fried shrimp coated in creamy sauce will begin to turn soggy if left on the counter.

Can You Make Baked Bang Bang Shrimp

Of course you can. Baked battered shrimp in pre-heated oven at 375 F for about 8 to 10 minutes, then flip it over and bake for another 7 minutes or until shrimps turn golden brown.
