Nature exists outside the boundaries
HIKING TRAILS From your first footstep onto the trail, the finest details of life become magnified as crucially important: The shiver of wings from the treetops as the birds mark your presence. The smell of damp earth. The soft crunch of dead leaves underfoot, like scattered paper bones. The feathered edges of moss catching the most vibrant green in the sunlight, blazing like tiny emerald flames against the tree bark. These are the stories of life we eternally carry, cherished as escapes later sought behind closed eyelids amidst the crowd. If you share that familiar ache to set your boots upon paths unknown, these trails will lead your wandering heart home.

FOLIAGE SIGHTSEEING “I hope I can be the autumn leaf, who looked at the sky and lived. And when it was time to leave, gracefully it knew life was a gift.” – Dodinsky
Autumn is undeniably one of the most celebrated seasons, and it’s no mystery as to why. The cooling temperatures beckon us outdoors, and our lungs fill with the crisp breath of a new season that washes away the stale tang of summer. Many are under the misconception you have to travel to the northern part of the country for stunning autumnal views, but they’re much closer than you think—right here in Southeastern Oklahoma. These places are a must if you’re searching for ‘gram-worthy photo ops and back-roads vibes.

STARGAZING Countless galaxies and endless pinpoints of light lay cradled in the inkiness of our wild skies. They reach out to us from millions of light years away, waving from the past as if to say, “I was here. I exist.” Perhaps that’s what we find so entrancing about the limitless nighttime sky. We see a reflection of our own desire to make our mark on an incomprehensibly vast universe. To leave a lasting impression that burns for eternity. Breathtaking opportunities for stargazing are seemingly just as boundless in Choctaw Country. Your best bet for capturing awe-inspiring constellations lies in the area between Noshoba and Smithville, or in the seclusion of one of our peaceful state parks, like McGee Creek, Robbers Cave or Beavers Bend. Any fishing story is a good story
FISHING Choctaw Country is known as a fishing mecca. The Glover River offers great opportunities to land smallmouth bass. At Lake Carlton, you’ve got a good chance at landing some muskie, saugeye and red-ear sunfish. Broken Bow Lake harbors largemouth of incredible sizes. Mountain Fork River routinely allows great catches of walleye, spotted bass and brown trout. Here’s a closer look at some amazing places to fish in Choctaw Country.

THE LEGEND OF BIGFOOT You’re alone in the woods, and the unexpected snapping of a nearby twig catches your attention. As you turn to look, you’re confronted with the outline of a hairy creature... too tall to be human, yet with the familiar stance of a man. Before you’re able to make any sort of distinction, it’s gone—vanished into the night. From the casually curious to avid enthusiasts with an unshakeable faith, the legend of Bigfoot has captivated generations of people for at least 400 years. Whether you’re canvasing the woods for prints or attending a local festival in honor of this elusive creature, it’s no wonder that the untamed woods of Choctaw Country are known as ‘Squatch Country. Is there actually a creature—somewhere between man and beast—lurking in the woods of Southeastern Oklahoma? The truth is out there. Waiting to be found.
